Honolulu, HI
In an early preseason battle in August, two reigning state champions would meet in the 2026 Ann Kang Invitational Championship match. The 41st Annual Ann Kang Invitational once again brought some of the best high school volleyball programs from Hawaiʻi and across the country together, giving local teams an opportunity to compete against elite mainland competition. This year's field featured programs from Hawaiʻi, California, and Texas, including #1 nationally ranked Sierra Canyon, #1 Hawai'i ranked ʻIolani, Punahou, Kahuku, Mira Costa, JSerra Catholic, and Harvard-Westlake, Buchanan, Cornerstone Christian, Edison, Highland Park, La Jolla County Day, Palos Verdes, San Juan Hills, and Santa Margarita.
After three days of competition, the tournament would come down to the CIF-SS Division 1 State Champions and No. 1 nationally ranked Sierra Canyon Trailblazers facing the HHSAA Division 1 State Champions and No. 1 ranked team in Hawaiʻi, the ʻIolani Raiders.
The championship match would bring plenty of energy inside ʻIolani's home gym as the two state champions battled for the tournament crown. The Raiders came out hot in the opening set, feeding off their home crowd and showing that they were ready to battle one of the nation's top programs. Junior setter and University of Texas commit Taimane Ainuʻu helped lead ʻIolani's attack as the Raiders took the opening set 25-18, putting themselves one set away from claiming the championship on their home court. Sierra Canyon, however, had no intention of letting the tournament end there.
The Trailblazers answered back in the second set and quickly shifted the momentum. Sierra Canyon came out with a strong response, taking the second set 25-11 and forcing the championship into a deciding third set. With everything even heading into the final set, both teams had one last opportunity to finish what had been a competitive weekend of volleyball. The Raiders had already shown they could go toe-to-toe with the nation's top team, but Sierra Canyon had another gear waiting.
In the deciding set, Sierra Canyon turned to its lead setter and University of Missouri commit, Lucky Fasavalu. Fasavalu would step behind the service line and deliver one of the biggest stretches of the championship match, putting together nine straight serves as the Trailblazers began to create separation from ʻIolani. That run would prove to be the difference as Sierra Canyon closed out the third set 15-9, completing the comeback and officially becoming the 2026 Ann Kang Invitational Volleyball Champions.
For Sierra Canyon, the championship added another statement to an already impressive program coming into the 2026 season. The Trailblazers entered the tournament as the No. 1 nationally ranked team and showed why throughout the weekend, finishing the tournament undefeated and overcoming an early deficit in the championship match. Their ability to settle in after dropping the opening set and close out the final two sets showed the composure and depth that made them one of the teams to watch heading into the season.
For ʻIolani, the weekend provided an opportunity to test itself against some of the best competition in the country and finish the tournament on its home court against the nation's top-ranked team. The Raiders came out of the championship match with plenty to build on after taking the opening set and putting Sierra Canyon in a position where the Trailblazers had to fight back. Both teams now turn their attention toward the regular season after a strong opening preseason tournament that gave Hawaiʻi volleyball fans an early look at two programs with championship expectations.
