Punahou overcame a two-set deficit on Senior Night, rallying past Mid-Pacific 3-2 in a thrilling back and forth battle at Punahou on Thursday, completing a dramatic comeback after the Owls appeared to be in control early. Mid-Pacific came out firing from the opening serve and took the first two sets by 25-23 scores, putting Punahou on the verge of being swept on its own Senior Night. Senior OH, Adair Clark, and Junior MB/OH,Tatiana Taylor, helped set the tone for the Owls, making key plays throughout the opening two sets and keeping Mid-Pacific composed as it built its early advantage.
The result was especially notable given what happened the last time these two teams met. In that matchup, Mid-Pacific found itself in a similar position of trailing early before storming back to defeat Punahou in a reverse sweep. That comeback gave the Owls confidence heading into Thursday's meeting, and for the first two sets, it looked as though Mid-Pacific might once again be the team delivering a comeback victory. Instead, Punahou flipped the script in front of its Senior Night crowd, responding to the two-set deficit with a comeback of its own.
The momentum began to shift in the third set as Punahou settled in and started playing with greater urgency. The Buff-n-Blue began finding openings in the Mid-Pacific defense while limiting the Owls ability to maintain the same offensive rhythm they had established earlier in the match. Sophomore middle, Kaya Young, Junior OH Carmen Lo, and Junior M/OPP Zoe Keaney, helped spark the turnaround providing important contributions as Punahou battled its way back into contention. Rather than allowing the two-set deficit to define the night, Punahou used the energy inside Hemmeter Fieldhouse to keep the match alive.
Punahou captured the third set 25-20, cutting Mid-Pacific lead to 2-1 and giving the home team renewed confidence. The Buff-n-Blue carried that momentum into the fourth set, where they continued to apply pressure and gradually pulled away. Punahou took the fourth 25-17, winning back to back sets after dropping the first two and forcing a deciding fifth set. What had looked like a potential sweep, Mid-Pacific had suddenly become a winner take all battle.
The fifth set delivered the kind of drama that had defined the match from the beginning. Both teams traded points and refused to let the other establish a comfortable lead, with every rally carrying greater weight as the score approached the finish. Mid-Pacific continued to fight behind the same competitiveness it showed throughout the opening sets, while Punahou leaned on the momentum it had built during its comeback. In the end, the Buff-n-Blue managed to hold off the Owls 15-13, completing the reverse comeback and securing the 3-2 victory.
For Punahou, the win carried added significance because it came on Senior Night, when the team was celebrating its seniors in front of the home crowd. After falling behind 0-2, the Buff-n-Blue responded with three consecutive set victories, showing composure and resilience when the match appeared to be slipping away. The atmosphere inside Hemmeter Fieldhouse only grew louder as Punahou fought its way back, and the fifth-set victory provided a memorable finish to the night.
The match also added another chapter to what has become a competitive matchup between Punahou and Mid-Pacific. The previous meeting had shown Mid-Pacific's ability to erase an early deficit and complete a reverse sweep, but Thursday's match produced the opposite outcome. This time, Punahou was the team that refused to stay down after losing the first two sets, turning the match around and winning three straight to finish on top.
