Honolulu, HI
With the game on the line and Saint Louis just one yard away from the end zone, Punahou's defense delivered one final stop to complete a dramatic comeback on Saturday afternoon. The Buff-N-Blue defeated the Crusaders 19-13 in overtime at Alexander Field, overcoming a seven-point halftime deficit and securing their first Interscholastic League of Honolulu Open Division victory of the season. Freshman Interim quarterback John-Mark Twigg connected with junior wide receiver Tanner Peterson for a 16-yard touchdown in overtime, giving Punahou its first lead since the opening quarter. However, the victory was not secured until the Buff-N-Blue defense stopped Saint Louis running back Tenari Fuamatu-Ma'afala on fourth and goal from the 2-yard line, bringing an end to a hard-fought rivalry matchup. The victory improved Punahou to 2-5-1 overall and 1-2 in ILH Open Division play, while Saint Louis dropped to 1-8 overall and 1-3 in league competition.
Saturday's meeting carried additional significance for Punahou, which entered the afternoon looking to avenge an earlier defeat against the Crusaders. Saint Louis had claimed the first meeting between the two programs on October 3, defeating Punahou 13-3 in a defensive battle. The Buff-N-Blue entered the rematch having struggled to find consistency throughout the season, while the Crusaders were also searching for momentum during a difficult campaign. With Punahou celebrating senior night, the matchup provided another opportunity for the home team to finish its season on a stronger note. Saint Louis, meanwhile, looked to complete a season sweep of its longtime rival and close its campaign with another league victory. Both teams entered the contest with plenty to prove, setting the stage for a defensive battle that would ultimately require overtime to determine a winner.
Punahou opened the game by establishing its ground attack while relying on its defense to create favorable field position. With starting quarterback Tai Utoafili unavailable because of an injury, freshman John-Mark Twigg stepped into the starting role and helped direct the Buff-N-Blue offense. Punahou eventually moved into scoring position, where kicker Jason Asano connected on a 27-yard field goal with approximately five minutes remaining in the opening quarter. The kick gave Punahou an early 3-0 advantage, but the Crusaders responded with a major special teams play that quickly changed the momentum. After a poor punt snap left Saint Louis backed up near its own end zone, Punahou gained another scoring opportunity deep in Crusaders territory. However, the ensuing field goal attempt turned into one of the most memorable plays of the afternoon.
Saint Louis defensive lineman Zander Namokui blocked Punahou's 25-yard field goal attempt, allowing Ricky Li'ili'i to recover the loose football and advance it toward midfield. As Punahou defenders closed in, Li'ili'i pitched the ball to Mario Garcia, who continued downfield and completed the return for a Crusaders touchdown. The unusual sequence transformed what appeared to be another scoring opportunity for Punahou into six points for Saint Louis. Although the extra-point attempt was unsuccessful, the Crusaders took a 6-3 lead with just six seconds remaining in the first quarter. The play provided Saint Louis with an early advantage despite its offense struggling to move the football consistently against Punahou's defense. For the Buff-N-Blue, the sudden change in momentum meant they would have to respond after controlling much of the early action.
The second quarter continued to feature strong defensive performances from both teams as neither offense was able to consistently establish momentum. Punahou eventually put together another drive deep into Saint Louis territory, advancing to the Crusaders' 5-yard line before linebacker Siaosi Leakona recorded a critical sack to prevent a potential touchdown. Forced to settle for another field goal, Asano connected from 30 yards out with just 20 seconds remaining in the first half, tying the game at 6-6. However, Saint Louis delivered another major special teams play on the ensuing kickoff. Frank Abreu broke through Punahou's coverage and returned the ball 87 yards for a touchdown, restoring the Crusaders' advantage just before halftime. Andrew Moses converted the extra point, sending Saint Louis into the locker room with a 13-6 lead despite its offense being held without a touchdown.
Trailing by seven points entering the second half, Punahou needed to find a way to generate more consistent offensive production while continuing to rely on its defense. The Buff-N-Blue remained committed to their ground game, with Aaron Johnson carrying much of the rushing workload as Twigg settled into his role at quarterback. Saint Louis continued applying pressure defensively, particularly through its pass rush, which repeatedly challenged Punahou's offensive protection. Neither team managed to score during the third quarter, allowing the Crusaders to maintain their 13-6 advantage heading into the final period. Although Saint Louis had created its lead through special teams, Punahou's defense continued preventing the Crusaders from extending the margin. With one quarter remaining, the Buff-N-Blue were still within a single possession of forcing a tie.
Punahou eventually found the breakthrough it needed during the fourth quarter when Twigg connected with Mason Perpignan for a 5-yard touchdown pass. The score marked the Buff-N-Blue's first touchdown of the afternoon and gave the home team an opportunity to erase the deficit that had stood since the final seconds of the first half. Asano converted the extra point, tying the contest at 13-13 and bringing Punahou back into contention. The touchdown also represented an important moment for Twigg, who had been asked to lead the offense despite his limited varsity experience. With the game tied, both defenses continued battling to prevent a decisive score during the remaining minutes of regulation. Neither team managed to break the deadlock, sending the rivalry matchup into overtime with the score still tied at 13.
The overtime period began with Punahou taking advantage of its opportunity to strike first. Facing another critical moment, Twigg connected with Peterson for a 16-yard touchdown pass, giving the Buff-N-Blue a 19-13 advantage. Saint Louis defensive lineman Kona Acedillo blocked the ensuing extra-point attempt, keeping the Crusaders within six points and giving them an opportunity to win with a touchdown and successful conversion. The Crusaders responded by advancing the football to Punahou's 2-yard line, putting themselves within striking distance of extending or winning the game. However, Punahou's defense remained composed as Saint Louis lined up for fourth and goal. Fuamatu-Ma'afala took the handoff and attempted to power through the middle, but the Buff-N-Blue stopped him at the 1-yard line, securing the overtime victory and sending the home sideline into celebration.
Offensively, Punahou received an important performance from Twigg, who completed 16 of his 19 passing attempts for 125 yards and two touchdowns without throwing an interception. Despite facing consistent pressure from the Saint Louis defense, the freshman quarterback found ways to make plays when his team needed them most. Peterson finished with four receptions for 55 yards, including the game-winning touchdown in overtime, while Drew Kinney contributed five catches for 37 yards. Perpignan added the fourth-quarter touchdown reception that helped force overtime, while Aaron Johnson carried the ball 24 times for 68 rushing yards. Twigg also contributed nine rushing yards on 14 carries as the Buff-N-Blue continued relying on their ground game throughout the afternoon. Although Punahou's offensive production was limited at times, the combination of timely passing plays and defensive stops allowed the home team to complete the comeback.
The Punahou defense proved to be one of the biggest factors in Saturday's victory, holding Saint Louis to just 101 yards of total offense and preventing the Crusaders from scoring an offensive touchdown. Saint Louis quarterback Luke Shigeta completed 13 of 24 passes for 56 yards, while Fuamatu-Ma'afala finished with 35 rushing yards on 16 carries. Shigeta also contributed 44 rushing yards on eight attempts, providing one of the few consistent sources of offensive production for the Crusaders. Defensively, Saint Louis delivered several strong individual performances, including Acedillo, who recorded 2.5 of the team's six sacks against Twigg. However, penalties repeatedly hurt the Crusaders, who were flagged 22 times for 175 yards, including eight false-start penalties. Those mistakes, combined with Punahou's defensive pressure, made it difficult for Saint Louis to establish any sustained offensive rhythm despite holding the lead for much of the game.
For Punahou, the victory represented an important turnaround after falling to Saint Louis earlier in the season. The Buff-N-Blue had been held to just three points during their October 3 meeting, but Saturday's rematch saw them respond with two passing touchdowns and a defensive performance that ultimately decided the contest. The win also came on senior night, adding another layer of significance for the players who had spent their final season representing the program. Head coach Nate Kia credited his team's preparation and defensive execution, emphasizing the contributions of several seniors who stepped up during critical moments. The victory snapped Punahou's six-game losing streak and provided the Buff-N-Blue with momentum entering their final scheduled matchup against Kamehameha Kapalama. For Saint Louis, the defeat brought a difficult season to a close after a game in which its defense and special teams had created several opportunities to secure the victory.
With the overtime victory secured, Punahou now turns its attention toward its upcoming matchup against Kamehameha Kapalama, which has already clinched the ILH championship. Although the Buff-N-Blue's season has featured several difficult moments, Saturday's performance demonstrated the team's ability to remain competitive and respond when facing adversity. For Saint Louis, the loss marked the end of a challenging campaign, but the Crusaders continued competing until the final play despite significant changes and setbacks throughout the season. The rivalry matchup ultimately came down to one final defensive stand, with Punahou finding a way to complete the comeback after trailing for much of the afternoon. On a day that featured blocked kicks, a kickoff return touchdown, and several momentum-changing plays, it was the Buff-N-Blue defense that delivered the final statement. With the Crusaders stopped just short of the goal line, Punahou secured a memorable senior night victory and added another chapter to one of Hawai'i's longstanding high school football rivalries.
