Waialua, HI
As September winds down and the regular season moves closer to its finish, the intensity surrounding high school football continues to grow. With postseason positioning becoming more important by the week, every game presents another opportunity to make a statement. For the undefeated Kalaheo Mustangs, that statement continues to be the same and they are not slowing down.
The Kalaheo Mustangs traveled to the North Shore to take on the Waialua Bulldogs in a matchup that carried plenty of importance as both teams looked to make their mark late in the regular season. From the opening whistle, the Mustangs established control and never looked back, putting together a strong all around performance on their way to a convincing 44-13 victory.
Kalaheo set the tone early with a physical rushing attack that kept the Bulldogs defense under pressure. The Mustangs consistently found running room, moved the chains and controlled the pace of the game. Once Kalaheo found its rhythm, Waialua had a difficult time slowing down the Mustangs' offense.
Senior rB, Marquez Mellor, played a major role in the victory, carrying the ball 16 times for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Mellor's ability to find running lanes and consistently gain positive yardage helped keep the Mustangs offense moving throughout the night. His two touchdowns provided an added spark as the Mustangs continued to build their advantage.
For Kalaheo, It was another complete team effort. The offensive line helped establish the running game, the backfield took advantage of the opportunities in front of them, and the defense continued to make life difficult for Waialua. The Bulldogs battled and managed to put 13 points on the board, but they could not generate enough sustained momentum to keep pace with the Mustangs. Kalaheo continued to answer every challenge and steadily extended its lead as the game progressed.
By the second half, the Mustangs had firmly taken control. That ability to maintain momentum has become an important part of Kalaheo's success. Rather than allowing an opponent to hang around, the Mustangs have continued to apply pressure and turn strong starts into convincing finishes.
With September nearly in the books, the timing could not be more important. The postseason is approaching, and every remaining game carries additional significance. Teams are fighting for positioning and the margin for error becomes smaller with every passing week. tougher challenges and higher stakes are ahead and Kalaheo will look to continue to play with the same discipline and physicality it showed against Waialua and have a strong postseason.
