Bailey Nakanelua of the ‘Iolani Raiders has been named the October 2025 Cover Athlete of the Month, presented by Matsumoto Shave Ice. Nakanelua becomes the first volleyball recipient in the history of the award, earning the honor after an outstanding performance in the state championship match.
Nakanelua was a driving force behind ‘Iolani’s state championship victory over the Kahuku Red Raiders, finishing the game with 36 assists and 5 digs in a clean sweep. Her precise setting allowed hitters to attack effectively, consistently finding open spots in Kahuku’s defense. Nakanelua’s ability to run the offense efficiently kept the Raiders in control and limited errors, making her a central figure in the team’s championship performance.
From the first set, Nakanelua dictated the tempo of the match, creating scoring opportunities for multiple hitters while also contributing defensively with timely digs. Her court awareness and consistency helped sustain long rallies and allowed ‘Iolani to maintain a dominant edge throughout the game.
Throughout the season, Nakanelua anchored the Raiders’ offense during a dominant ILH regular season, with the team suffering only a single five-set loss to Kamehameha-Kapalama. Her consistent performance in both setting and defense provided stability for the team and helped position them for success in the postseason.
The state tournament showcased the Raiders’ strength as a unit. ‘Iolani advanced through the bracket without dropping a single set in any match, with Nakanelua facilitating the offense in every game. Her contributions allowed hitters to attack with confidence and helped the team execute their strategies effectively, ultimately culminating in the clean sweep over Kahuku to secure the championship.
Nakanelua’s performance demonstrates not just skill, but the impact of a playmaker on a championship-level team. By distributing the ball efficiently, maintaining control under pressure, and contributing defensively, she played a pivotal role in the Raiders’ success and set a standard for excellence in Hawai‘i high school volleyball.
As the Month of October comes to an end, the search for a new Cover Athlete of the Month begins. Who is going to walk away with the award for November? Only time will tell as we announce the winner next month.
