Talanoa Ili, a standout defensive anchor for the Kahuku Red Raiders, has been named the September 2025 Cover Athlete of the Month, presented by Matsumoto Shave Ice. Ili becomes the first recipient from Kahuku to win the award, earning the honor after a dominant performance against one of the toughest opponents in the nation.
The USC commit turned heads in a key matchup against the then No. 1-ranked Mater Dei Monarchs, one of the most highly regarded high school football teams in the country. In that game, Ili finished with 9 total tackles, including 3 tackles for loss and 2 sacks, repeatedly disrupting Mater Dei’s offense and setting the tone defensively for the Red Raiders.
Ili’s performance was a force from start to finish. He consistently got into the backfield, applying pressure on Mater Dei’s quarterback and stuffing running plays before they could develop. His ability to diagnose plays quickly and finish tackles helped keep the Red Raiders competitive throughout the game against elite competition.
Beyond the Mater Dei matchup, Ili has been a cornerstone of the Red Raiders’ defense all season. Known for his strength at the point of attack, high motor, and instinctive play‑making ability, he has been a disruptive presence on every snap. His leadership on defense has helped Kahuku build momentum early in the OIA Open Division league play.
Through the first stretch of the season, the Red Raiders have responded with a strong start, entering league play with an undefeated 3–0 record. As they continue to battle for league positioning, Kahuku is set to take on division rival Mililani on October 10, a matchup with implications for the number one seed in the division.
Ili’s impact goes beyond statistics. His presence on the defensive front has elevated Kahuku’s entire defensive unit, allowing linebackers and defensive backs to make plays around him. His consistent pressure and ability to change the point of attack have made him a player opposing offenses must account for on every down.
As the Month of September comes to an end, the search for a new Cover Athlete of the Month begins. Who is going to walk away with the award for October? Only time will tell as we announce the winner next month.
