Kapolei, HI
In one of the biggest matchups of the OIA Open Division regular season, the Kapolei Hurricanes defeated the previously undefeated Mililani Trojans on Saturday night, at Alvin Nagasako Sports Complex. With both teams entering the game undefeated in league play, the stakes could not have been higher. Only one team could finish the regular season on top, and Kapolei delivered a statement victory in front of its home crowd, handing Mililani its first loss of the season and securing the No. 1 seed in the OIA Open Division playoffs.
The game began as a defensive battle, with both teams struggling to find consistent offensive production in the opening quarter. Mililani defensive front made life difficult for Kapolei running game, while the Hurricanes worked to find their rhythm against one of the state’s top ranked teams. The Trojans eventually broke through in the second quarter when Junior qB, Hunter Fujikawa, scrambled for a six-yard touchdown, giving Mililani a 7-0 lead with 3:25 remaining in the first half.
Kapolei responded with a crucial scoring drive that completely changed the momentum. Sophomore qB, Jonez Nunuha, connected with freshman WR, Kameeiamoku Manners, for a big pass play before finding Zeph Salis for a 28-yard touchdown. Beckham Collman’s extra point tied the game at 7–7 with just over two minutes remaining before halftime. The Hurricanes then received another major boost when Aiden Aity blocked a 46-yard Mililani field goal attempt, preventing the Trojans from reclaiming the lead. Kapolei capitalized on the opportunity, driving into scoring position and converting a 27-yard field goal by Collman as time expired to take a 10-7 advantage into halftime.
After the break, Kapolei offense came alive and the Hurricanes began to take control of the game. The turning point came when the team committed to its ground attack and used its physical offensive line to create running lanes. Senior rB, Chazz-Michael Kapahu, became the centerpiece of the second half surge, breaking through Mililani defense for significant gains and helping Kapolei extend its lead. Following a Mililani three and out to open the second half, Kapahu powered his way into the end zone on a 12-yard touchdown run. The Hurricanes then converted a two-point attempt on a play involving Salis, pushing their lead to 18-7 with 6:58 remaining in the third quarter.
Mililani struggled to regain its offensive rhythm as Kapolei defense continued to apply pressure. The Hurricanes forced another three and out and quickly turned the stop into more points. Kapahu broke free for a 24-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter, extending Kapolei advantage to 25-7. His second half performance proved decisive, as he finished with 107 rushing yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns. Remarkably, 102 of his rushing yards came after halftime, highlighting the adjustments Kapolei made to overcome Mililani strong defensive front.
Kapolei success was not limited to its offense. The Hurricanes played a disciplined game on both sides of the ball, avoiding turnovers and limiting costly penalties while making key plays on special teams. Mililani, meanwhile, was unable to find an answer after halftime. The Trojans had entered the contest with an 8-0 record, but Kapolei held them to just seven points and prevented them from mounting a comeback. A late interception in the end zone by Kapolei defensive back, Hayden Hose, further stopped Mililani from gaining momentum, sealing a dominant performance by the Hurricanes defense.
The Kapolei victory carried major consequences for the OIA Open Division standings. Both teams finished league play with identical 4-1 record, but Kapolei earned the No. 1 seed through the head to head tiebreaker. The Hurricanes secured a first-round bye, while Mililani finished as the No. 2 seed. The win also marked Kapolei fourth consecutive victory and improved the Hurricanes to 7-1 overall, while Mililani fell to 8-1. Coming into the matchup, the Trojans had been the top ranked team in the state, making Kapolei performance an even bigger statement heading into the postseason.
For Kapolei, the victory represented the progress the program has made and its growing confidence as a championship contender. After suffering an earlier season loss to the Campbell Sabers, the Hurricanes responded by stringing together wins and continuing to improve. Defeating Mililani showed that Kapolei could adjust under pressure, execute in critical moments, and compete with the very best teams in Hawai'i. For Mililani, the loss ended its undefeated run, but the Trojans remained a dangerous opponent with a strong record and an opportunity to regroup before the playoffs. Despite having their top two receivers due to injury, the trojans have yet to play with a fully healthy squad. The trojans have held their grounds and still managed to put up wins despite having their star players on the field.
The postseason is upon us and there will be a champion crowned soon. The Kapolei Hurricanes and Mililani Trojans get the first round bye while the Campbell Sabers will face the Leilehua Mules and the Kahuku Red Raiders will face the Kailua Surfriders in the OIA Open Division quarterfinals.
