Haleiwa, HI
Layden Kauka and Kashus Daley have been named the February 2026 co-Cover Athletes of the Month, presented by Matsumoto Shave Ice. They are the first athletes in NorthVue & Matsumoto Shave Ice history to share the award, recognized for leading their teams to Koa Wood championships on the final day of the season.
Layden Kauka, a senior guard for the Kohala Cowboys, has been a dominant force since returning home from Utah Prep. The Kohala native is already a two-time state champion, winning titles in his freshman and sophomore seasons. Last year, Kauka tried to lead Kohala to a third title, but an ankle injury in the semifinals limited his play. The Cowboys ultimately lost to Seabury Hall and finished third in the state tournament.
This season, Kauka was fully healthy and ready for redemption. He led the Cowboys through an undefeated season, averaging 28 points per game, and helped Kohala reach the D2 State Championship. In the title game against Seabury Hall, Kauka led the team with 28 points, controlling the pace, hitting crucial shots, and making important plays on both offense and defense. His leadership ensured Kohala captured the Koa Wood Trophy, completing a story of personal and team redemption.
Kashus Daley, a junior guard and primary ball handler for the Kahuku Red Raiders, has also been a key player for his team. Last year, Kahuku reached the semifinals but fell to eventual champions St. Louis, finishing third in the state tournament. This season, Daley helped lead the Red Raiders to their first state title since 2018.
Kahuku started the season with a narrow loss to division rival Kailua but quickly went on a winning streak that carried them through the postseason. In the state championship game against Punahou, the Red Raiders trailed by 9 points at halftime. Daley led a remarkable comeback, finishing the game with 26 points and helping the team mount a 31-point turnaround to lift the Koa Wood Trophy back up north. His performance showed his ability to lead as a standout junior in high-pressure moments.
Both athletes played key roles in their teams’ championship runs. Kauka’s scoring, defense, and leadership helped Kohala go undefeated and win the state title. Daley’s playmaking, determination, and clutch performance allowed Kahuku to overcome tough challenges and take home the championship. Their efforts show the talent, hard work, and composure needed to succeed at the highest level of Hawai‘i high school basketball.
As February comes to an end, the search for the next Cover Athlete of the Month begins. Who will win the award for March? Only time will tell, as we announce the winner next month.
Congratulations to Layden and Kashus on winning the Cover Athlete of the Month presented by Matsumoto Shave Ice.
Mahalo to our sponsor, Matsumoto Shave Ice, for their endless support for the student athletes in the State of Hawai‘i.
